Broadcast Touchups
In the world of studio lighting, I have done my fair share of touchups. As local station labor budgets dwindle, what was once a full-time dedicated in-house lighting person who would tailor and tweak the lighting as the broadcast evolved is now often reassigned to a person who has at least 5 other positions in the course of their day. The promise and popularity of fluorescent lighting being, even, easy to shoot, flattering, and thusly the panacea of all lighting problems has

WFSB- Live with New Look & Lighting
Hartford, CT -- After teasing the new set all last week during the evening broadcasts, Meredith Corporation's WFSB-TV in Hartford, CT finally went live on air at 12:00pm today. (EDIT: This post was delayed along woth the original launch so WFSB could focus on reporting the first major winter storm of the season). The following photos were shot during the first full rehearsal on-set last week. This installation marks the second collaboration I have had with the wonderful peopl
Norma to Susannah Changeover- A day at San Francisco Opera
Some of you may know I spent a chunk of last season at San Francisco Opera. This video shows a day on stage in a changeover from Norma to Susannah- The changeover takes around 5 hours to complete and the cooperation of a small army of people and mountains of paperwork. Quite an amazing feat that still is fascinating to me even after having spent months doing it. www.sfopera.com #opera #sanfrancisco #design #inspiration #setdesign #costumedesign #lightingdesign #lighting #plan

WFSB-TV in Hartford, CT Re-launches Main Studio with New, Energy-Efficient Lighting
This is not the first LED retrofit I have worked on. If I had my druthers, I think all studios would still be tungsten. I also imagine that a lighting person at every evolution of new technology has uttered a version of this phrase since the invention of Edison’s lightbulb… Something along the lines of: “Blast, this infernal contraption, bring me my candle and chamberstick, knave…” But we must evolve with the times, and the LED is here, becoming more affordable, and has some
It's been a busy few weeks!
The month of March went a little crazy on me- lots to post about. Two seperate theatre shows, Installation at a TV station, maybe even dabble a small post about my experiences with the recent healthcare exchanges. Lots to post about so stay tuned! WFSB-TV in Hartford, CT was the TV station that I recently installed, and they went on the air with their new lighting in the last couple weeks. I will detail a little more about the project in future posts, but for now- See a littl

Ivy + Bean - The Musical, Photos are up!
Just got a CD in the mail with production photos from Orlando Repertory Theatre's Production of Ivy & Bean - The Musical, now closed. After locating a CD-Rom Drive (it's about as common in my day-to-day as a dial-up modem and America Online), I have selected a few, one of which accompanies this post. The rest can be found on my Theatre Portfolio Page. The show, in it's second production ever, is based on the amazingly popular book series by the same name and written by author

WHEC is on the Air!
Just finished up a trip to WHEC Rochester, NY. Today, while in Fargo, ND, I got an email from the chief engineer and they are on the air with new LED Fresnels and lighting setup. I'm quite proud of the overall project and the additions will help the studio save on lamp changes, focus shifting, and maintenance costs overall. The Picture is of the newsroom shot which is new to this station and is shot in 5600K daylight, while the studio is in 3200K. Lighting Equipment supplie

Revelations at WESH
Spent this morning at WESH-TV here in Orlando which in my opinion is one of the best looking broadcasts in the market. This was mainly a lighting checkup as well as an opportunity to work with the camera settings and lighting levels in a controlled environment. This broadcast is the perfect example for championing the need for experienced operators at all levels of production. As production budgets decrease and automation increases there are certainly many drawbacks. In the s
